Just last night I was talking to M and we were talking about the crazy foods that different cultures eat. We talked about how in Peru they eat guinea pig and in China one can eat dog… while it often seems unappetizing to most of us, for the people growing up in those cultures it’s very normal. I said it was like me eating pork; for M it seems a vile thing, but I come from a bacon loving culture and it’s normal to me.
As our conversation continued I decided to share with M something that I had just in the last week studied in the Bible with a man from Albania. Jesus disciples were eating grain with unwashed hands and the Jewish leaders condemned them for this (see Mark 7). Jesus however replied, saying “Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” It’s not about how we dress or what we eat; not about how we appear… what makes us clean or dirty is what comes out of our hearts.
I think that M desires for the things that come out of his life to be clean and I pray that soon he realizes that Jesus can help him do just that. Please pray with my relationship with M.
